Core Web Vitals, alternatively known as Web Vitals, are a set of specific factors or metrics that determines a webpage’s overall user experience. Core Web Vitals comprise a set of performance metrics that benefit in highlighting aspects of web page development, thereby affecting the User Experience (UX) like- page loading, interactivity, and visual stability. To cut it short, Core Web Vitals are a subset of such factors that is an integral part of Google search console, otherwise known as Google’s “page experience” score.

Core Web Vitals are amalgamation of three vital performance metrics –

  • LCP (Largest Contentful Paint)

  • FID (First Input Delay)

  • CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift)

These metrics centres on factors like- when certain events complete, what is interactive or visually affected as these events take place, and while pages load until a point of constancy relative to the user experience. This indicates that the score values can change depending on the users interacting with the page. Better scores can be achieved when the pace of the occurrence of events becomes faster along with time.

LCP (Largest Contentful Paint)

LCP or Largest Contentful Paint generally denotes the time interval between the start of a page being loaded to the time when the largest image or text block in a user’s viewport is fully concentrated. Scores might differ as the page loads and when content is visible but the largest node is still in the backlog yet to be displayed, which gets noticeable at throttled connection speeds.

LCP can be improved by implementing the following actions:

  • Removing redundant third-party scripts

  • Upgrading web host which can induce faster load times overall (including LCP)

  • Setting up lazy loading

  • Removing large page elements

FID (First Input Delay)

FID or First Input Delay refers to the amount of time taken by a page to be ready for user interaction. This is dependent on the time taken for the page to respond to clicks, scrolls, or keyboard inputs. User interaction can be ominously postponed by main thread-blocking script tasks.

Here are some guidelines for improving FID:

  • Minimization or deferring JavaScripts

  • Removing any unnecessary third-party scripts like Google Analytics and heatmaps which negatively impact FID

  • Using a browser cache that leads to a faster load content on a page

CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift)

CLS or Cumulative Layout Shift can be defined as the measured distance and fraction of the viewport which shifts due to DOM influence or the dearth of dimension attributes for chief media elements.

CLS can be improved by the following steps:

  • Using set size attribute dimensions for media content like video, images, GIFs, infographics etc.

  • Making sure ad elements have an earmarked space

  • Adding new UI elements
